Reading & Discussion:
MEDIA CRITICISM IS LEFT:
WHY WE NEED A MEDIA-CRITICAL LEFT
Media as ideology criticism, ideology as capitalism criticism
Bourgeois media and anti-bourgeois conspiracy mythology belong together because they both leave capitalism untouched.
The fairy tale of the leftward shift of the last few decades is heard from both camps and is a unified playdown of the reality of neoliberalism. But just as capitalism once prepared the ground for fascism, neoliberalism is now preparing the ground for neo-fascism. That is why a real alternative from the left is needed, which must be critical of the media to be able to win majorities.
Left-wing media criticism, however, is a sub-area of Marxist ideology and hegemony criticism, which in turn cannot analyze subjective consciousness without social existence. As a materialist, it therefore becomes a criticism of the system, i.e. of capitalism, with the question: How can the fatal dialectic between the capitalist base and the capitalist superstructure be broken and pushed beyond itself?
Capitalism is never just an economy but has always been a form of socialization and a mode of subjectivization.
On Friday, September 6, 2024, the author Lukas Meisner will present his book “Medienkritik ist Links”, published by Das Neue Berlin (Eulenspiegel Verlagsgruppe).
