Land Of Utopia? –
Everyday life in Rojava
LAND OF UTOPIA? – EVERYDAY LIFE IN ROJAVA
In July 2012, the revolution began in northeast Syria. In the three Kurdish cantons of Afrin, Kobanê and Cizîrê, an autonomous self-administration system was established that is based on the values of grassroots democracy, gender equality and ecology. The “Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria” now controls around a third of Syrian territory. It brings together different ethnicities, religions and languages under its roof.
Since its founding, the region has had to defend itself against numerous threats. In addition to the military, diplomatic and economic conflicts with the Assad regime, there are above all the existence-threatening wars with Turkey and IS. Due to the Syrian civil war, the region is also affected by an embargo, which severely affects basic services. Despite all these adversities, society has continued to develop and built relatively stable structures.
On Friday, November 3rd, 2023, the sociologist and journalist Christopher Wimmer will present his new book and invite you to the subsequent discussion. More information about the book at Edition Nautilus, the publisher’s website.
